In a heartfelt announcement on Monday, Xherdan Shaqiri, former Bayern Munich and Liverpool star, has decided to retire from international football after an illustrious 14-year career with the Swiss national team.
Shaqiri, who has been a vital part of the Swiss squad, boasts an impressive record of 125 appearances and 32 goals. Remarkably, he is the only Swiss player to have participated in seven major tournaments, ranging from the 2010 World Cup to Euro 2024.
At 32, Shaqiri made two appearances in Euro 2024, where Switzerland reached the quarter-finals. Reflecting on his journey, he shared on Instagram: “Seven tournaments, many goals, 14 years with the Swiss national team, and unforgettable moments. It’s time to say goodbye to the national team. Great memories remain, and I say to you all, thank you.”
Shaqiri’s club career is equally distinguished. He has clinched three league titles each with FC Basel and Bayern Munich, along with a Premier League title at Liverpool. Since 2022, he has been showcasing his talents with Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire.
Retiring as Switzerland’s fourth-highest goalscorer, Shaqiri stands behind Alexander Frei (42 goals), Kubilay Turkyilmaz, and Max Abegglen (both with 34 goals). His departure marks the end of an era for Swiss football, but his legacy will undoubtedly inspire future generations.
