Gunners and Villa Eye Mikel Merino

Arsenal and Aston Villa are in a fierce competition to sign Euro 2024 winner Mikel Merino, as reported by Mundo Deportivo.

The Spanish international had a standout season with Real Sociedad, scoring eight goals and providing five assists in 45 appearances across all competitions. This impressive performance has caught the attention of several top European clubs this summer.

Merino, 28, is in the final year of his contract with Real Sociedad, putting the club in a challenging position. Although Sociedad has offered him a new deal, Merino has yet to accept it. The club fears losing him as a free agent next year, which makes a transfer likely to ensure they receive a fee. His release clause is reportedly set at €60 million.

In addition to Arsenal and Villa, Merino has attracted interest from other LaLiga giants. Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are also keen on the midfielder, with new Barcelona manager Hansi Flick particularly admiring Merino’s talents.

A move to Arsenal could be especially appealing for Merino, who previously played with Gunners captain Martin Ødegaard at Real Sociedad during the 2019-20 season.
